Specialist Doctoral Study Programs

Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery

Otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS) education in Rancabadak Hospital Bandung (pioneer Hasan Sadikin General Hospital),

began at early 1950s, by otorhinolaryingologist from Holland, Dr. JA Neils, born as first graduate otorhinolaryngologist Dr. Chasan Boesoirie while he positioned as deputy director of Rancabadak Hospital.

Faculty of Medicine Padjadjaran University officially established at September 11th 1957 and Dr. Chasan positioned as first Head Division and Head of Study Program otolaryngology until 1962.

ORL-HNS education at the Medicine Faculty of Universitas Padjadjaran /Hasan Sadikin Hospital began in 1962 with the first resident being Darmanto, MD who finished in June 1966. The second resident was Surimah Surachman, MD, who transferred from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, and finished in June 1965. Every year the ORL-HNS Study Program received 2-4 residents until 1977. Starting in 1998, the number of residents accepted increased by more than four people, and starting in 2001 reached 10 people per year. Currently, the ORL-HNS study program has produced 235 specialists spread across various places throughout Indonesia. Since 2011 the ORL-HNS Disease Sciences Division has changed to ORL-HNS Health Sciences and since 2017 has changed to ORL-HNS Health Study Program.

In its development, the teaching staff of Study Program Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery has participated in many trainings/educations abroad. The staff of the Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) Department who received additional education abroad was Dr. Surimah Surachman for surgical oncology of head and neck surgery at the Nederland Cancer Institute Anthony Van Leeuwenhoek Hius Amsterdam, Netherlands (1971-1972), she was also the first female head and neck surgical oncologist consultant. This is an example for other staff who also attend education, training, workshops, and symposiums in various Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) disciplines both at home or abroad.

Along with the rapid development of medical science in general and ORL-HNS Health Sciences in particular, a lot of human resources and sophisticated equipment are needed to be able to run this Division properly. With more and more staff joining, a need arose to be able to focus more on the development of each ORL-HNS division, which later in the 2013s,

the otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS) Division was divided into eight divisions which include:

  1. Larynx-pharynx Division
  2. Audiology-vestibular Division
  3. Otology Division
  4. Rhinology-allergy Division
  5. Endoscopy-broncoesophagology Division
  6. Oncology, head and neck surgery Division
  7. Facial plastic reconstruction Division
  8. ORL-HNS Health Community Division
